There are several lifestyle choices that you can make today that will increase your brain power.
Studies show that 80% of Americans wish they could improve their ability to remember things, and 94% wish they were smarter. The quest for intelligence has spawned a booming industry of products designed to maximize IQ. Research shows that these products, games and websites enhance verbal reasoning skills in those over 60.
How to Increase Brain Power
- Nutrition. Research shows that the Mediterranean diet significantly slows cognitive decline. Food that are particularly beneficial include blueberries, oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocado, broccoli, beets, rosemary, sage, turmeric, egg yolks, green leafy vegetables, dark chocolate, olive oil and coconut oil.
- Exercise. Exercise build muscle tissue and brain cells. It triggers a protein in the brain that promotes neuron growth which increases hippocampus mass. The hippocampus is the brain region associated with memory. Exercise also increases the amount of oxygen available to the brain. Research shows that different forms of exercise have different effects on the brain, and that cardiovascular, weight training and stretching are all needed to maximize brain power,
- Supplements. Some supplements help improve and protect the health of brain cells, including fish oils, resveratrol, phosphatifylserine,ginkgo biloba, l-carnosine, DMAE, acetyl-l-carnitine.
- Social interactions. A Harvard study of people over the age of 50 found that those with the best social lives also had 50% reduced rates of cognitive decline as they aged.
- Varying routine. Performing routine things in a different way can create new connections between different regions of the brain and even open new neural pathways. Some ideas include writing with non-dominant hand, reading backwards, varying routes, etc.
- Adequate sleep. Going to bed on time and sleeping for 7-8 hours a night improves memory and cognitive speed.
